It is better to give than to receive. The venerable aphorism is drummed into our heads from our first slice of a shared birthday cake. But is there a deeper truth behind the truism? The resounding answer is yes. Scientific research provides compelling data to support the anecdotal evidence that giving is a powerful pathway to personal growth and lasting happiness in a world full of blurred lines and questions about right and wrong, it is nice to know one thing with absolute certainty: helping others is important, worthwhile and vital for a community to flourish. At times, it can be overwhelming to feel like such a small person in a vast world of troubles. Where does one start? While one person cannot take on the whole world, one person’s contribution can and will make a world of difference.
There are small ways to make a difference:
- Give your time. The gift of time is often more valuable to the receiver and more satisfying for the giver than the gift of money. We don’t all have the same amount, but we all do have time on our hands, and can give some of this time to help others – whether that means we devote our lifetime to service, or just give a few hours each day or a few days a year.
- Smile and be friendly. Sometimes a simple little thing like this can put a smile and warm feeling in someone else’s heart, and make their day a little better.
- Stopover to help. The next time you see someone pulled over with a flat tire, or someone in need of help, stop and ask how you can help. That’s how we can make other people’s day, and also our day.
While talking Lata Bai who is from an extremely weak financial background, she started working as a daily wage labourer to support her family. Early in life, she lost her 2-year-old son because of a lack of money and proper medical care. She then had to leave her husband and live alone with her elder son. No matter the hardships, Lata never lost hope and continued working. She faced a lot of difficulties during the pandemic due to the scarcity of food. Our main goal is to reach out to people in order to help them and provide them with happiness and hope. We hope to change such lives one day at a time and want to be a reason that some smiles today.
